Hello Friend!

Check out this first look at the new CGI version of The Smurfs! Colour me excited!

Having grown up with these little blue dudes, I'm eagerly anticipating their silver screen debut. Granted director Raja Gosnell's wrapsheet gives me some pause - Home Alone 3, Scooby-Do - but Beverly Hills Chihuaua had some nice moments, so The Smurfs shall hopefully retain their childlike appeal.

Revisioning the 1958 creation of Belgian cartoonist Pierre "Peyo" Culliford are the team from Sony Pictures Animation and the writing of J. David Stem. The fact that Stem has worked on the Rugrats franchise and Shrek 2 is heartening, so here's hoping he doesn't go too slapstick with Gargamel.

The Smurfs is slated for a US release on 17 December 2010 (in 3D no less), so here's hoping for a similar Australian release date.

I'm hoping for a live action Paul Giamatti as Gargamel. Just picture it... perfect...

You're so right! Maybe we'll just have to settle for him voicing Gargamel?
