I just caught the UK trailer for Lars Von Trier's Melancholia and it sent me back into the tingling daze I experienced walking out of the screening at the Melbourne International Film Festival. Here's what I tweeted then:
Von Trier brings the paralysing, planetary force of depression to transcendent light. Sledgehammer subtle, but I'm still reeling.
I'm looking forward to seeing it again, and wrapping my head around writing a proper review. In the meantime, here's the deceptively simple synopsis:
Justine (Kirsten Dunst) and Michael (Alexander Skarsgård) are celebrating their marriage at a party in the home of her sister (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and brother-in-law. Meanwhile, the planet Melancholia, is heading towards Earth.
And the trailer:
UK release date: 30 September 2011
US release date (limited): 11 November 2011
Australian release date: 15 December 2011
